Kurelek's Passion of
Christ series, though less well known
than many of his other paintings, is among
his most arresting works. Completed in 1963,
the series consists of 160 paintings, which
illustrate the Gospel According to St. Matthew,
starting from Chapter 26, verse 17, to the
end of the Gospel. Kurelek's sensitive and
moving interpretation of the Easter story
reflects his intense spiritual devotion.
The Roman Catholic, Anglican, and United Churches
have all endorsed the series as being an excellent
interpretation of the Gospel According to
St. Matthew. The film has also been endorsed
by the Canadian Council of Christians and
Jews.
The paintings are housed
at the Niagara Falls Art Gallery.
